Local Eagles, National Impact: Saving Newborns

Thanks to a jumpstart from the Gig Harbor Fraternal Order of Eagles, newborns nationwide are routinely tested for hidden heart defects. The pulse oximetry test is quick and painless and can make the difference between life and death. In 2008, the Gig Harbor Eagles began funding the test at Tacoma General Hospital.  Today the screening is also routine at Good Samaritan Hospital and Auburn Medical Center. The Eagles’ consistent support helped not only with the equipment and training costs, but also with a research study of the results which was just published on January 19, 2015 in Pediatrics: Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The U.S. Health and Human Services Agency has recommended pulse oximetry for all newborns.

As a national organization, the Eagles raise millions of dollars annually to combat heart disease and support medical research.
