Hospital and Clinic Volunteer Roles

  • Patient and Family Care Roles: Assist clinic and hospital staff in patient rounding, family and visitor assistance, stocking supplies, cleaning equipment and patient escorting.
  • Gift Shops: Stock inventory, perform cashier duties and assist visitors. Shifts are during normal business hours Monday through Friday, some evening and weekend shifts may be available.
  • Patient Access: Greet visitors and patients, assist with directions, provide escorting, make deliveries and perform other various clerical tasks at main entrances throughout our facilities.
  • Mail Room (Good Samaritan Only): Sort, deliver and pick up mail throughout the facility. Volunteers are scheduled 8am-12pm and 12pm-4pm weekdays only.
  • Surgery Waiting Room: Check in family members, assist in tracking surgeries, provide comfort items to those waiting and facilitate communication between families and staff. Shifts are scheduled Monday through Friday from 7am-8pm.
  • Clerical: Assist in various departments with tasks such as data entry, filing, collating and assisting with phones. Volunteers are scheduled during normal business hours Monday through Friday.
  • Grounds: Water, prune and care for indoor and outdoor plants. Volunteers are scheduled on weekdays during daylight hours. Some seasonal- only opportunities are available such as our Rose Garden volunteers.
  • Linen Services (Tacoma General Only): Assist with the folding, sorting and organizing of hospital laundry. Volunteers are scheduled during the week from 8am-5pm.
  • Pet Therapy: Do you have a dog who is registered for pet therapy through Pet Partners? Would you and your animal like to volunteer to visit patients? Volunteer opportunities are available at Tacoma General and Mary Bridge for dogs registered through Pet Partners after completing the application and interview process.
  • Entertainers:  If you can play the piano, guitar or other soothing instrument you can volunteer to play music with our patients or for visitors in our hospital lobbies. Pianos are available at Allenmore Hospital and Tacoma General Hospital locations. Musicians who know children's music and encourage participation can also play at Mary Bridge with our pediatric patients.
